THE FIELD

The corn is forty acres and it is listening.

It was planted in rows. It does not grow in rows anymore. Where the men have wept, the soil is salt and ground quartz, and the stalks that come up there come up wrong — taller, wetter, full of something that pops.

Do not touch the corn. If you touch the corn it will open. It cannot be closed again. We have tried. We have tried for a long time.
